I'm looking for a game to scratch an itch I've had for a while. Ogre battle 64 is my favorite game of all time, and was really looking forward to being able to take it on the go with the switch virtual console, but since that never worked out, I'd like to see if there's anything else on the switch with similar gameplay/style. The main things I liked about Ogre battle 64 were: RPG Elements (Leveling up, custom equipment you can acquire, etc) The setting/art The multiple endings Recruitable unique units (also units needing certain requirements before recruiting was cool like certain good/bad choices or other recruited characters) Parties instead of 1v1 combat (Something that seems unique to OB64 over FFTactics so this is probably unrealistic) I've looked into the following games and am unsure or have decided against it: - Disgea 5 - Not a fan of the art style or over the top japanese everything. - Mercenary Saga Chronicles - Seems interesting, I'm just not sure about recruitment/RPG elements - Wargroove (Already purchased this one in an attempt to scratch a fire emblem itch, and it definitely didn't do that) Are there any other good switch games that would meet this criteria I should look into? I made the mistake of purchasing wargroove without doing enough research, so I'd like to avoid that this time around. Since each game is it's own contained story, as well as a collected whole, I really like that you can essentially buy it as episodes. That lets players who dont play as much or who want to take a break between each game pick up one game at a time, spreading the purchase out.
Most people can just buy it outright, or at least save up until they can, but I always appreciate flexibility so I love episodic games. Not to mention if you buy just the first one and discover you hate it (hard to do with such a well designed game, but people have different tastes so it's always a possibility) then you only bought part of the series rather than spending the full amount. I'd love to see more games go this episodic style route. • • • • • • •. Plus you never know which choices might straight up murder one of your party members, at least on a first playthrough. So you can't really become fully devoted to a single cohesive team.
Never know when you might have to improvise and bring in your sideline characters. Pretty sure I fought the final battle with like 3-4 out of 7 characters from my 'main' group I'd been playing with. The others were like level 1 or 2 and I had zero experience with their skill(s). Really taught me to spread the love a little more when I start BS2 • • • • • • •.
I absolutely love the Ogre Battle series and there's really never been anything else like March of the Black Queen and OB64. They've never really gotten the attention they deserve, the thing the whole series is most known for is Tactics Ogre being a precursor to Final Fantasy Tactics which is a real shame (though not the worst legacy to have really). I would love to see a new game, but TBH if it ends up like the PSP remake of Tactics Ogre maybe it's better left alone. Not to say the PSP version is a bad game but man it's so different from the original.

I'm hoping we get the old games on the Switch since they did come out on the Virtual Console. • • • • • • •. Honestly if the games you listed didn't scratch the itch, you might not find what your looking for. But I know you didn't come here to hear that, so I'd recommend checking out 3 games: Valkyria Chronicles 4.
In terms of tone, narrative, and art style, this game reminds me of 2002-era Fire Emblem games. It's a solid strategy JRPG. You should definitely do your research though because the combat system, albeit very fun, is very different from FF Tactics. Also it takes place in a fictional WWII with light magic, which isn't quite high fantasy but I ended up loving it.
